Blood pressure measurement techniques

Blood pressure is not the same throughout the day. It varies with time of day or night, exercise, excitement or stress. Because of this normal variation, it is important to measure the Blood Pressure a few times on different occasions.

If the Blood Pressure reading is consistently equal to or higher than 140 systolic and 90 diastolic or both, then the doctor will diagnose you as having high blood pressure or hypertension.

Blood pressure should be measured in a standard manner and the equipment used must meet certification criteria.

Blood pressure is a big precursor for stress, and if you need some techniques to reduce stress, you should check out our post about how drawing and creating 3D art can reduce stress in adults and children, and result in healthier living.

How to measure blood pressure?

The following blood pressure measurement techniques are recommended :

1.The patient should be seated on a chair with their backs supported and their arms bared and supported at heart level. They should not smoke or ingest caffeine during the 30 minutes preceding the measurement.

2.The patient should rest for 5 minutes before blood pressure is taken. An appropriate cuff should be used. The bladder within the cuff should encircle at least 80 percent of the arm.

3.Measurements should be taken with a mercury sphygmomanometer. A recently calibrated aneroid manometer or a validated electronic device can be used. Finger monitors are not acceptable. Blood pressure devices used for home measurement should be checked periodically by comparing readings with simultaneous readings taken with a mercury device.

4.Both the systolic (SBP)and diastolic (DBP)blood pressure is recorded. The first appearance of sound is taken as SBP and the disappearance of sound is the DBP.

What to remember

Your blood pressure varies, and this is important to note as you should take a measurement roughly at the same time each day if you want to be safe and certain. If you follow the four steps above you will be able to accurately measure blood pressure.

Anemia – Low Blood Hemoglobin

Anemia is defined as low blood hemoglobin concentration. The normal haemoglobin level is between 11.5 to 16.5g/dL for adult female and 12.5 to 18.5g/dL for an adult male. The main function of hemoglobin is to carry oxygen to the tissues hence anaemia leads to hypoxia (lack of oxygen) in organs and later to a wide range of clinical consequences.

Anemia is not a disease but a symptom of various conditions including extensive blood loss, excessive blood cell destruction or reduced blood cell formation. There are several kinds of anaemia caused by various underlying circumstances and the most common is lack of iron from daily intake. It is a condition when there is not enough healthy red blood cells in the blood circulation to carry oxygen to the tissues. This function is carried out by a protein called haemoglobin. Anaemia usually means not having enough haemoglobin. The normal haemoglobin level is between 11.5 to 16.5g/dL for a female and 12.5 to 18.5g/dL for a male.

Causes of anemia

1.Blood loss (which can be acute or chronic).
*Acute blood loss may be seen in a motor vehicle accident or following surgery. Blood loss of more than 500ml usually warrants replacement.
*Chronic blood loss occurs during excessive menstruation in females, chronic worm infestation and other conditions.
*Poisons from certain types of snakes, if you are walking in a high risk area be sure to get the best snake boots available.

2.Inadequate production of normal red cells by bone marrow.
This may be due to:

*Deficiency of essential factors like iron, vitamin B12, folate and erythropoietin.
*Marked growth spurt in adolescence, causing an increased iron requirement which outstrips the rate of iron absorption.
*Menstruation in females with an average loss of 30 mg of iron each month may lead to an iron deficiency situation.
*Toxic factors: inflammatory disease, liver or kidney failure, medications.
*Hormone deficiency: low thyroid hormone levels.
*Invasion of bone marrow: blood cancers, bone marrow disease.
*Disorder of developing red cells: conditions such as thalassemia.

3.Excessive destruction of red blood cells due to infection or certain medications.

4.Anaemia can also be due to generalised or specific nutrient deficiencies. Besides protein, other few micronutrients are needed to form red blood cells and haemoglobin such as iron, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, copper, riboflavin and folic acid. Thus, lack of any of these micronutrients may lead to nutritional anaemia.

Why Is Traditional Medicine So Bad For Back Pain Treatment?

Back pain treatment

Back pain treatment is a hotly debated topic for your personal health care. Every week you can read a least one research study that claims a popular, conventional back pain treatment is ineffective. Even the most established treatments such as physical therapy do not escape the headlines. Only recently a study from Warwick University (UK) found that one session just offering advice to back pain sufferers achieved the same results as six weeks of physiotherapy!

Of course, conducting such a large study is difficult as there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration. What sort of back pain treatment was given? What was the quality and experience of the therapists used? Did the subject all have the same cause of back pain? Did they carry out the exercises or advice as instructed?

This last question is the big one in my view. All courses of back pain treatment usually involve some sort of exercise or instruction on how to sit, stand or move to reduce the stress on the back. But are we capable of following this advice? Most therapists in conventional medicine make the assumption that we can.

Muscular problem or something more complicated?

However, if back pain is not due to a specific medical condition is it usually a muscular problem. The human body is perfectly capable of supporting itself with minimal muscular effort. Postural muscles are ‘designed’ to provide long periods of sustained activity to keep us upright and balanced. The phasic muscles (or movement muscles) are for short bursts of activity such as lifting your arm or turning your head. This is a bit of a simplification because all muscles provide a mixture of both functions but it will do for this example.

I see many people who tighten their lower back muscles to sit and stand up straight – these are the wrong muscles! They should not be active to keep you upright, this should be a function performed by muscles higher up that will balance your upper body on your spine.

So if someone suffering with their back pain is not ‘using’ themselves correctly how are they suddenly supposed to know how to use it right for exercising or trying to correct their posture? This is why I believe conventional back pain treatment does not offer the best solution.

Physical therapy, osteopathic, chiropractic and acupuncture treatments do get results and I recommend people to get a diagnosis and initial help from a qualified practitioner. In the short-term, manipulative treatment will help to get you moving and back onto your feet. However, I do not see these therapies as a long-term solution because they rarely get to the cause of ‘misuse’ and you could find yourself returning to your therapist on a regular basis.

Conclusion

If you are looking to back pain treatment that address the cause of neck, back or shoulder pain you’ll need to go deeper. Your muscles are only doing what you tell them to do, but, and here is the big question,

Do you know what you are telling them to do? In place of exercise I believe a course of re-education will achieve far more by removing your bad habits that are causing your discomfort.

Head and Neck Pain Are Not to be Taken Lightly

Why neck pain has become such a serious problem

With the hustle and bustle of the modern world, head and neck pain are a relatively common side effect of our personal health care and a hard day’s work, but it is not something to be taken lightly, especially if it is persistent or does not go away when rested.

I found out the hard way that such pain can be symptomatic of more severe conditions than stress, and I learned some great coping mechanisms along the way.

It started out for me when I first started working as a writer. I would typically spend numerous hours in front of the computer screen every day, and my head would just be pounding at the end of the day. I would typically take a few Tylenol and then be on my way, and at first that really worked.

I became worried when my back head and neck pain started to get worse and become more frequent, so I would try to stand up and stretch and get away from the computer for a while, and it did help. As soon as I would go back to the computer, however, it would all come right back and, on some occasions, be even worse than before.

I finally decided to go and see the doctor for a back pain treatment and let him know what I was experiencing, and I am really glad that I did. As it turned out, I had moderately high blood pressure of which I was completely unaware.

He said I probably did not realize that I had it because I had not worked in a very stressful job before that, and because I was not getting nearly as much exercise as I once had, now that I was at the computer several hours a day.

I was happy to find that out, and got on some medication to deal with the issue, but I still did not know what caused the neck pain. I talked to my doctor about it, and he said that it could be a number of factors, from the way I was sitting, to the position of my computer screen, and said the most important thing was to find a way of sitting where I felt the most comfortable.

I worked on it, and eventually found a way of positioning myself at my work station where I felt more comfortable, and within a few weeks, head and neck pain were simply no longer an issue.

Fortunately, it seems that computers, keyboards, office chairs and office equipment in general are more ergonomic these days so that head and neck pain don’t have to be an issue for most people.

I would suggest however, that someone experiencing these problems should get them checked out as soon as possible. It could simply be a matter of stress, but it could also be something more severe.

Learn To Recognize When An Anxiety Attacks Is Approaching

Recognizing the precursors of an anxiety attack

The first time that I had an anxiety attack, I truly thought that I was either having a heart attack. My heart was beating faster than I’d ever thought possible and I couldn’t catch my breath. I had no idea what was going on and tears were streaming down my face. Had it not been for a friend who was able to calm me down, I probably would have called 911. My dear friend, who was more than familiar with anxiety attacks, recognized my symptoms immediately and was able to alleviate my condition within a few minutes.

The very next day, I was making a doctor’s appointment. My doctor was wonderful and spent quite a bit of time explaining anxiety attacks, what causes them and what can be done if and when they do hit again.
Luckily, anxiety attacks don’t hit me too often. It is only in high times of dealing with stress or when I’m emotionally distraught that I feel them creeping up on me. When I can feel them approaching, I am usually able to avoid having, what I consider, a full-blown attack. For those of you who have experienced anxiety attacks, you know the feelings. This amazing feeling of dread and panic just takes control of your body.

Your thoughts feel jumbled and maybe you can’t even focus on anything. For some, your entire body feels engulfed in sweat. For others, you are suddenly shivering and can’t stop trembling. Maybe you feel like you’re going to pass out or even throw up at any moment. Your chest feels tight and you may even feel like you are just completely out of control.

Once the anxiety attacks threaten to take over your body in certain circumstances, you may or may not be able to control it. Your doctor, or even your own research, can help you to learn to recognize when an attack is approaching and how to calm yourself down and get things under control. It may be something as simple as just removing yourself from the situation. Maybe leaving the room is something you need to do. Perhaps you just need to take a series of deep breaths and focus on something else for a few moments. Once the anxiety attacks hit, it is harder to stop than it is before they hit.

Your doctor may be able to diagnose you with a variety of disorders and be able to treat you based upon his or her diagnosis. There are anxiety medications that you can take that could make a world of difference for you. Certain medications may do more than just prevent or treat anxiety attacks or disorders; they may also help with depression or simply the way that you live your life.

Why live your life in fear of being in certain predicaments or scared that you will find yourself having another anxiety attack? If something can be done to treat these thoughts, why not go for it? Don’t continue to ignore the way that you feel. Reach out for some help from a trusted doctor. If you feel the need, do some of your own research first just to see how common anxiety attacks truly are. Having these terrifying attacks are not uncommon. They should not be embarrassing or even hinder your lifestyle. Face these attacks head on, challenge them, and overcome them. You’ll be incredibly grateful that you did.

Knowing The Difficulties Of Lumbar Back Pain

lower back pain

Most folks think that getting lower back pain ensures that you’re entire back is hurting and aching. Even though this might be the case for some, this is definitely not the truth for other people. Some people only encounter soreness within their lower back. When this happens, it’s just not merely called back pain anymore. It becomes lumbar back pain.

Lumbar Lower Back Pain

The spine features four regions. The 1st region is called the cervical or neck backbone which is made up of the first seven bones in the spine. The subsequent region is made up of the next twelve bones in the spine and is appropriately called the upper back vertebrae. Now, the final region is made up of the final two groups of bones called sacrum as well as the coccyx. The 3rd region  consists of five bones which is called the lumbar vertebrae. This is the area that’s really painful if an individual is suffering from lumbar back pain.

Some might think that since lumbar pain is only situated in the lower portion of the back, it isn’t that painful. Nevertheless, this is still a case to case basis. For many, their lumbar lower back pain can be so extreme that it may be even more painful compared to those whose whole backs are in pain. Therefore, to say that getting lumbar back pain is better than having your whole back aching won’t be accurate and proper.

Just like the more prevalent cases of back pain, lumbar pack pain may be brought on by a lot of things such as certain health conditions and inactive lifestyle. Don’t worry though because the treatment and prevention of back pain isn’t that different from those treatment options that aimed at people whose entire backs are in pain.

One great thing about lumbar back pain and the science these days is the fact that plenty of agencies and institutes making the effort to create specific treatment options for it. This means that in the forseeable future, personal health care providers don’t have to make use of general back therapies to those people who are suffering from lumbar back pain.
